Gardai have detained three men overnight at Athlone Garda station as part of an investigation into a serious sexual assault on two young girls in the town.

The victims of the alleged attack are both aged under 10.
Two of the men detained yesterday by Gardai are in their 40's, while the third man is in his early 30's.
The assault is alleged to have taken place at a house in Athlone around 4 o'clock on Saturday afternoon.
Mayor of Athlone Councillor Gabrielle McFadden says the town is in a state of shock following the alleged assault.
