Eirgrid has received thousands of public submissions over its controversial Gridlink project which would see dozens of pylons erected in Tipperary.
While the exact number isn't known yet – over 15 hundred were lodged through one website alone by last night's 5 pm deadline.
There's growing opposition to the 500 million euro plan s to upgrade the electricity network through a series of high voltage, 45 metre high pylons stretching from Kildare to Cork – with two of the proposed route running through South Tipp at Cahir, Clerihan and Carrick.
A public consultation phase – where local communities were urged to lodge their views ended at 5 pm yesterday evening with the plans being opposed on a number of grounds including health visual and scenic intrusion to the impact the pylons will have on tourism and property prices.
Eirgrid says the exact number of submissions made isn't yet known but some 15 hundred came through one website alone – rethinkpylons.org which represents some 65 local groups.
A decision on which route will be chosen is due later this year while a planning application isn't expected to be lodged until 2015- however opposition groups in Tipperary are confident that they can put a stop to the project
