The urge to vote is reflected in the numbers at polling stations, who are reporting a good turnout.

Since last night reports of people coming home to cast their ballot have been lighting up social media, with people travelling from as far away as Hong Kong and Australia posting photos of their trip.

At 9.30 this morning, there were 110 tweets per minute using the hashtag #hometovote – which is still trending on Twitter.

A group of 30 Irish people living in London are en route from London, via Holyhead to Dublin Port.

The young vote is seen as particularly vital in this campaign, with tens of thousands registering to vote in recent months.

Polling stations are open since 7 o’clock this morning, where officials are reporting a brisk turnout, ranging from 15 to 20 percent.

The polls are open until 10 pm tonight so there’s plenty of time left to have your voice heard.

The results should be clear by lunchtime with an official declaration in the afternoon.
