The group representing nurses and midwives says trolley numbers have risen by 44 per cent in November compared to the same time last year.

The figures are now 53 per cent above what they were in November 2006 when the then Health Minister Mary Harney labelled the situation a national emergency.

Yesterday there were 44 patients on trolleys and chairs at University Hospital Limerick which covers North Tipperary.

University Hospital Waterford had 10 people awaiting admission with 22 in a similar situation at Cork University Hospital.

The Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation reported 6 patients on trolleys at South Tipp General Hospital in Clonmel yesterday.

INMO General Secretary Liam Doran says Health Minister Leo Varadker must react to the situation immediately by taking steps to increase bed capacity.
