Tanaiste wants to move forward on 8th amendment issue

The Tánaiste says it’s in the interest of Irish women that we move forward on the issue of the 8th amendment.

But Frances Fitzgerald’s signaled there won’t be an early referendum on the issue due to the level of discussion still needed.

The Citizen’s Assembly report that is due next month will be referred to an Oireachtas Committee that will then make a recommendation for a Dáil vote later this year.

The Tánaiste was asked in the Dáil if she would support holding a referendum at the earliest possible date.

She says it’s within Irish women’s interests to move forward with the issue, and says Ireland has a very bad history when it comes to women’s reproductive rights.
