Statement given to Nenagh Gardai alleging sex assault by prison officers.

A man has made a detailed statement to Gardai in Nenagh alleging he was sexually assaulted by prison officers in Limerick prison and Spike Island.

The man – who was jailed for a number of minor offences at the time – also went to the offices of the Inspector of Prisons in Nenagh.

The assaults are alleged to have taken place over a number of years starting on Spike Island and then continuing in Limerick when the Cork facility closed in 2004.

According to the Inspector of Prisons, Clonmel native Judge Michael Reilly, once complaints are made to the Gardai then the investigation is solely a matter for An Garda Siochána.
