Scaffolding was erected at the site in 2009 in order to carry out conservation works to the wall paintings in the 12th century structure.
It was originally planned that the work would be completed in four years – however it's now entering into its eighth.

The Office of Public Works began a major project to save wall paintings in the 12th century chapel back in 2009 – the paintings have been described as the earliest and most important of their type in Ireland and of great historical importance.
The length of time that the project is taking has come in for some criticism. Raising the topic in the Dail Deputy Lowry asked for a statement on the progress of the work and how soon it will be finished.
