This will enable homes and businesses receive broadband services with speeds of 30 Mbps.

The department is currently undergoing the technical, financial and legal preparations this year with a view to launch the procurement process in 2014.

People can check what providers are operating in their area through ComReg's website at www.callcosts.ie –  those who are not covered by such commercial providers will be covered by the National Broadband Scheme.
