A Tipperary County Councillor says reduced speed limits set to be introduced next month will be an absolute disaster.
On February 7th, speed limits on rural local roads reduce from 80km/h to 60 km/h.
Some routes which are currently at 100km/h will drop to 80.
The government says this change will make Ireland’s roads safer for motorists, pedestrians, cyclists, and all road users.
Thurles based Independent Councillor Jim Ryan told Tipp Today the lack of consultation was not acceptable.
“This was just decided by the government to be brought in by every local authority in the country – I’m not even sure if the Gardaí were consulted in relation to it. This is just a knee jerk reaction by the government to try and slow down traffic in busy roads but its not going to work. Every Councillor on Tipperary County Council has said that.
“Its also disrespectful to the Councillors because once again we have been overlooked in a very important issue that normally we would have control over. Anyone I have been talking to has said this is just a farce and a joke.”
