Over 100 motorists caught speeding in first hours of National Slow Down Day

Drivers reading letters, writing in diaries and watching TV shows on their phones are just some of the behaviours being caught by Roads Policing Units across the country.

National Slow Down Day continues until midnight tonight, with motorists being asked to consider if it’s worth losing their job or even their life due to speeding.

Twenty-four people have died on Irish roads so far this year, which is a decrease of twelve compared to last year.

Tipperary Superintendent Eddie Golden, outlines some of the speeds detected across the country since midnight.

“We have about 106 people that have been detected overall in the country. Some of the speeds that we’re after detecting this morning are 136 kilometres per hour in a 100 kilometre zone on the N3 in Cavan, 95 in an 80 kilometre speed restriction in Portarlington in County Offaly and 117 in a 100 zone on the N15 in Donegal.”
