Another Tipperary County Councillor has added his voice to criticism of planned speed limit reductions.
From next Wednesday a number of 80kph roads will drop to 60 while some routes which currently have a 100 limit will be brought down to 80.
Independent Clonmel Councillor Richie Molloy has backed calls from Niall Dennehy and Jim Ryan for the move not to go ahead without further input from local authorities across the country.
He told Tipp Today that previously Councillors had a say in any speed limit changes.
“I think if there was more enforcement of the current rules that that’s the answer maybe. If you observe the speed limits that are currently in place I think that would be enough.
“And probably again we’ll just take Tipperary County – there’s 40 Councillors. We’re all going to be familiar with different stretches of roads around the county – the roads that are very narrow or there’s lots of bends.”
Councillor Molloy has described the speed limits changes as a blunt instrument by the Government.
“It looks to me again like a box ticking exercise that at a stroke of a pen now you’re going to reduce these limits. The decisions are taken at a central level and the ordinary people aren’t involved at all in the process.”
