Rising costs could affect Text Alert Scheme

Several areas are already signed up to the community alert schemes which send out messages if there is suspicious activity to warn members who have signed up. 

Gardaí say that the schemes have proved to be highly successful in tackling crime.

However, Fianna Fail Councillor John Hogan has expressed concern that plans to increase the cost of the texting system could lead to them shutting down as community groups can't afford the price. 

He is calling for the Department of Justice to take over the bill for the scheme.
