A new independent report says the government has allowed human rights to take a terrible battering since the financial crisis.

The Free Legal Advice Centre, along with over 50 organisations, has contributed to the study which will be sent to the UN.

It says women, the poor and migrants have been the worst affected – and it’s called for the direct provision system to be abolished, the minimum wage to be increased, and a referendum on the definition of the family.

Noeline Blackwell is the Director of FLAC.

“Human rights in Ireland – particularly rights to work, rights of health, education, housing – these rights have taken a terrible battering” she said.

“While maybe the macro-society was protected and our banks were protected – and all that was necessary – there wasn't a sufficient focus on how people were faring” she added.
