Pope Leo XIV visited the Premier County in 2005 when he attended a special Mass to celebrate 700 years of the Augustinian Abbey Church in Fethard.

Tipperary Priest Fr Iggy O’Donovan was a student in Rome with Robert Prevost.

The Fethard native says he is a highly intelligent man.

“A member of the Augustinian Order like myself – we were in Rome at the same time as students. He spent much of his time in Latin America – in Peru.

“He also became world head of the Augustinian – Prior General of the Augustinian Order. For 12 years he held that post.

“So the Pope has been around.”

Pope Leo XIV will lead a mass for the college of cardinals at the Sistine chapel today.
