Members of the Abbey House of Prayer Group had been occupying the historic building since December 31st after the Franciscan Order decided to close the church.

The issue ended up in the High Court as the order sought legal backing in their efforts to have the group removed from the building.

The case was back in court yesterday where an undertaking was given to vacate.

Pat O’Gorman was one of those involved in the sit-in – he told Tipp Today that while the Judge acknowledged their moral right to protest he was dealing with the legal aspect of the case.

“While he listened to what we had to say he was not interested – he told us that we were trespassing on a property that was not ours and our occupation was illegal and we had no lawful right to be there. He was only interest in the legal point of view.

“He said to us if we didn’t leave the church that he would put an injunction on and the people who were occupying the church would be arrested and brought to jail.

“So we agreed then voluntarily to end our sit-in.”
