Clonmel native Michael O'Reilly failed a drug test taken before the Irish team left for the games in Brazil.
The Portlaoise boxing club member was informed of the alleged offence yesterday at the Irish camp in Brazil.
News broke yesterday afternoon that the Michael O'Reilly had failed a test which was taken in Ireland before the boxing squad left for Brazil.
The 23 year old was born in Clonmel but boxes out of the Portlaoise club.
Following that failed test O'Reilly is now provisionally suspended from all competition – if the middleweight does decide to challenge the finding then his B sample will be tested.
Speaking on Tipp Today Daniel McConnell of the Irish Examiner says the breaking of the story caught Irish boxers in Rio completely by surprise.
The opening ceremony for the Rio Olympics takes place at the world-famous Maracanã later.
One man who isn't competing is Conor Wallace who narrowly missed out on a place at the Olympics to Michael O'Reilly – but the Newry boxer is refusing to criticise his team mate.
The 8 strong Irish boxing squad are going into the games with high hopes of success.
Daniel McConnell says Michael O'Reilly would have been one of those hoping to bring home a medal.
