Proposals for North Tipp Greenway

Creating a Greenway in the North of the county could put Tipperary’s tourism product on the map.

There are calls for disused railway lines to be transformed into Greenways for the area.

One potential route, along the ‘Stolen Railway’, is the remains of a link that existed between 1868 and 1878 which takes in the sites of Portumna, Lorrha, Lakeen Castle and Birr.

The other proposed route is the disused line between Roscrea and Portumna which closed in the 1960s.

The Green Party feels a Greenway could be a huge tourism draw, and Gearóid Fitzgibbon, the party’s Tipperary representative, says there’s a significant amount of groundwork done by the local community.
