Their families watched as the French President laid the country's highest award – the Legion d'honneur – on their coffins.

In a speech afterwards, Francois Hollande paid tribute to them – and the sacrifice they made:

Meanwhile Irish President Michael D. Higgins is to attend a special service in Dublin this evening in a show of solidary for those affected by the French terror attacks.

The mass, organised by the Archbishop of Dublin in collaboration with the French Ambassador Jean-Pierre Thebault, takes place in the Pro-Cathedral at a quarter to six this evening.

Archbishop Diarmuid Martin said everyone is invited to attend to show their solidarity with those affected by last week's atrocities in Paris.
