President Higgins is in the capital Bogota – while later this week he will travel to Cuba where he will meet with President Raul Castro.
The Colombian government recently signed a new peace deal with the FARC, which passed through congress as opposed to a referendum, as a result there is an acceleration of the processs of demobilisation and decommissioning of arms.

President Higgins will be the first head of state to visit one of these demobilisation compounds where he'll meet with the UN, senior military personnel and participants.
