Tipperary MEP Phil Prendergast says she was shocked and frightened when she was assaulted while on the street.
The incident happened in Cork city on Wednesday evening last when a passerby came up to the Clonmel woman and shouted abuse and then spit in her face.

The MEP, who is running in the upcoming European elections for the Labour party, reported the incident to Gardaí and received medical attention.
The former midwife was walking up the street on her own to attend a funeral…she says that it was a very frightening experience and she doesn’t believe that it would have happened to a male politician.
