According to the Millward Brown survey in the Sunday Independent, 56% of people are also in favour of a new referendum being held to repeal the current position, which gives equal right to life to the mother and foetus.
More than 40% say they disagree with the Government's decision to postpone tackling the abortion issue until after the next general election.
