Tributes paid to Tipperary great Des Hanafin

The people of Thurles have been paying warm tributes to Des Hanafin.

The former Fianna Fail Senator passed away unexpectedly yesterday morning at the age of 86.

Mr Hanafin was first elected to North Tipp County Council in 1955 and became chairman the following year and also took a seat in the Seanad in 1956 which he held for almost three decades.

He is survived by his wife Mona, daughter Mary and son John as well as extended family and friends.

Des Hanafin will be laid to rest after 12 o’clock mass in The Cathedral of the Assumption, Thurles this Sunday.
