A member of Tipperary County Council is targeting a place in the Upper House of the Oireachtas.
Clonmel based Independent Richie Molloy is seeking election to the Seanad.
Nominations close on December 18th while polling ends on January 30th.
Councillor Molloy is the area manager with Family Carers Ireland who for the first time are a nominating body.
He will be covering thousands of kilometres over the coming weeks to canvass fellow County Councillors for their vote.
He told Tipp Today earlier that getting a seat in the Seanad would give him a chance to highlight the situation of Family Carers at a national level.
“It probably gives me a chance to bring Carers issues more to the national stage and I suppose really and truly Family Carers are under pressure all the time really.
“Sometimes when elections are over – there will be lots of soft talk during the election – lots of stuff can be forgotten the week after. So if I was successful I’d certainly intend to be a champion for Family Carers.”
