Tipperary TD Mattie McGrath isn’t ruling out the possibility of legal action in the row over Dáil speaking rights.

Four Regional Independent TDs – including Tipperary Deputy Michael Lowry who helped form the programme for government – wanted to sit in the Opposition benches.

Ceann Comhairle Verona Murphy says she’s not satisfied they are members of the Opposition and they won’t be allowed to speak as such.

Deputy Mattie McGrath recently joined the technical group to ensure he would have speaking rights in the Dáil.

He told Tipp Today earlier that he had spoken with Verona Murphy this morning.

“I did say to the Ceann Comhairle that this may end up with other legal advice and could be challenged in the courts because this is just unconstitutional as far as I’m concerned. It continued from 2011 to 2 weeks ago when the opposition didn’t respect the majority that was sent back by Dáil Éireann. There was no overall majority – two parties coalesced – and they needed independent support and they got it.”
