Opposition parties will be backing Tipperary disability rights campaigner Cara Darmody in the Dáil today.
The 14 year old from Ardfinnan began a 50 hour sleepout in front of Leinster House at 10 o’clock this morning to highlight the government’s failure to deliver on promises made to her in the past.
Cara has been highly critical of the delays in providing assessments of need within the agreed 6 month timeframe.
The issue will be debated in the Dáil later with during both Government Business and under Private Members Business.
On Tipp Today earlier Cara – who has two autistic brothers – said she was determined to continue with her campaign which now has significant backing.
“Every opposition leader and party is going to back me up and bring up the assessment of needs crisis in the Dáil for 5½ hours today and more importantly about my advocacy and all the work I’ve done to date. And that I’m not going to stop until I get the success which is to end disability discrimination and to fix the assessment of needs waiting crisis. And most importantly to get the government to stop breaking the law.”
