Michael Lowry says a decision on whether he gets speaking time from the opposition benches will be made before the Dáil sits again next month.
The Tipperary TD says his Regional Independents wouldn’t insist on recognition of the group today to avoid a repeat of yesterday’s chaos.
Deputy Lowry has released a statement to clarify the position of his Regional Independents who haven’t been recognised by the Ceann Comhairle and former member of the Group Verona Murphy today.
The Thurles TD says they are cooperating with today’s Order of Business in the interest of not having a repetition of yesterday’s scenes in the Dáil.
Deputy Lowry has described them as appalling and outrageous, and a shameful display of obstruction.
The Opposition united against his plan to register as a technical group for speaking time which would allow them to question Ministers and the Taoiseach as if they were opposition.
It would also of course take time away from the other parties.
The North Tipperary poll-topper says after intensive discussions with the Ceann Comhairle, Taoiseach and Tánaiste it was agreed that the issue will be referred to the Dáil Reform Committee – which will include opposition members – by way of Dáil motion .
The Dáil isn’t due to sit again until the 5th of February and the statement says a final decision will be made by then.
