Comments from a Tipperary TD in the Dáil chamber are under fire from the leader of the Independent Ireland Party.
The incident was one of many to make the headlines amid angry scenes in Leinster House over the speaking time row.
Michael Collins says there is widespread political and public disgust following comments from Deputy Mattie McGrath, who has described his namesake, the revolutionary hero General Michael Collins, and himself, as two “traitors from West-Cork.”.
On Tipp Today earlier Deputy Michael Collins said Mattie McGrath had overstepped the mark this time.
“It was in anger and in bitterness and in return I do remember quite clearly telling him to clear off back up to Michael Lowry the man you have given out so much about all your life and now you’re in political bed with him and he’s your boss. I just said clear off, go away, go back up to him.
“Mattie’s comments to me are water off a ducks back. In politics that’s what happens unfortunately we all get heated and we say things we shouldn’t say. But in relation to General Michael Collins his memory is sacrosanct and it should not be casually abused in the manner in which Mattie McGrath chose to do so.”
