Councillor Ryan O’Meara is to contest the Fianna Fáil General Election convention for the North Tipperary / Northwest Kilkenny constituency.
It follows Deputy Jackie Cahill’s decision not stand due to health reasons.
Ryan O’Meara was successful in the local elections earlier this year in his first time standing securing more than 1,500 first preference votes.
The Cloughjordan resident says he has given the issue serious consideration since Jackie Cahill’s announcement.
“It’s a big decision to make – I’ve given it a lot of consideration and met with party supporters and members. I firmly and passionately believe that I can be a fresh new voice in Dáil Éireann for the people of North Tipperary and Northwest Kilkenny.
“I believe it is time that my generation stood up and demanded representation that we deserve at national level to ensure that our concerns are heard in the areas of housing, health, cost of living, childcare, infrastructure and much, much more.”
