An Bord Pleanála’s decision to grant planning permission for a telecommunications structure beside a North Tipp school is very concerning according to a local TD.
St Michael’s National School in Cloughjordan had objected to the plans for the Eir Exchange compound on Main Street.
Their appeal to the board following Tipperary County Council’s granting of permission due to the proximity to the school and other grounds was rejected.
Labour Deputy Alan Kelly has questioned the decision.
“Literally right beside the entrance where the children go into the school. It was previously refused because of its location but this time around it has been passed.
“Now unfortunately decisions by An Bord Pleanala cannot be challenged to that organisation but I have met with the Board of Management, Parents Council and others in Cloughjordan to advise them of their options regarding where to go now.”
Deputy Kelly wants Eir to examine other locations for the mast.
“I really would wish that Eir would change their plans as regards this mast. Its going to have huge local opposition. There are other sites in the area potentially that they could use to improve their signal – it shouldn’t necessarily be right beside the school. So I’ve a deep concern in relation to this and I will be supporting the parents, the Board of Management and the people of Cloughjordan who have really deep concerns of where they should go now in opposing this.”
