Planning permission has been granted for what is described as a state-of-the-art healthcare waste treatment and recycling facility in Tipperary.
Tatver Properties is the company behind the project at the National Bioeconomy Campus.
The development at the former Lisheen Mine site will compromise of two distinct operations – Treatment and Recycling.
The facility will accept healthcare waste from the likes of hospitals, nursing homes and general practitioners.
This typically consists of needles and syringes, masks, containers, used dressings, gowns and tubing and may include biological, infectious, chemical and sharps hazards.
The development will take in around 10,000 tonnes per annum of healthcare waste for treatment and recycling.
The plans also include a waste transfer station on the 3¾ hectare site on the National Bioeconomy Campus with an additional 15,000 tonnes of hazardous temporarily stored, handled and consolidated onsite for onward transfer.
The project is expected to create approximately 150 construction jobs over an 18-month construction and commissioning period.
Once operational there will be around 25 permanent positions.
