Plans to use a historic building in the Premier County to house asylum seekers has hit a stumbling block.

A Section 5 exemption application was lodged with Tipperary County Council recently to allow Abbey House on Abbey Street in Cahir for International Protection Accommodation Services applicants.

However the local authority has now ruled that the property which was built around 1835 is not deemed an exempted development.

As a result a contract for an IPAS accommodation cannot be fulfilled unless there is proper planning permission.

The options available to B&N Ventures Ltd are to appeal the decision to An Bord Pleanala within four weeks or to lodge a planning application for the development with Tipperary County Council.
