The stark figures were revealed to councillors at their district meetings where officials from the Environment section said the problem of abandoned horses was not getting any better.

Out of 324 horses that were taken into the council's care last year, only 4 were reclaimed by their owners with the rest had to be put down.

Director of Services for Water and Environment Matt Shortt says the problem is rampant right around the county.

Dealing with abandoned or stray horses cost Tipperary County Council €40,000 last year.
