One in four Irish people don’t take any exercise.

Almost three quarters of people do some physical activity for exercise, recreation or sport.

The latest figures from the CSO show roughly half of those walk for recreational purposes, while the other half do sport or exercise of another kind.

Almost 15% of people do not participate in any physical activity, due to a lack of time, illness or disability, or a lack of motivation.

Going to the gym is the most popular means of keeping fit – particularly for women – followed by swimming and then cycling.

80% of those surveyed said they participated in sport to improve their health and fitness.
