Northern Ireland border ‘key issue’ in Brexit negotiations

The EU’s Chief negotiator on Brexit has warned that dealing with the border will be a key issue in negotiations.

Michel Barnier’s told a joint sitting of the Dáil and Seanad he will work to avoid a hard border.

He says a united EU will be there for Ireland on this, the peace process and other issues.

But he says certain border controls are part of the EU and unavoidable.

Speaking earlier at the gathering of MEPs from the EPP group in Wicklow, the Taoiseach warned that the Northern Ireland peace process would be under threat from any return of a hard border.
