The Finance Minister has signalled that the Revenue Commissioners will not play a role in the collection of water charges from those who refuse to pay.
Michael Noonan has also told the Dáil that the government is looking at the “affordability for the generality of households”.
He says an announcement will be made in the next week or two to give certainty to people.
But he appears to be ruling out the coalition calling in Revenue to do the job of collecting the charge.
“On the revenue obviously all options are being looked at; but as you've said yourself, the Revenue have never in the past acted to collect outstanding debts – they're responsible for raising revenue” he added.
