A new ten year plan to boost the economic fortunes of South Tipperary has called for an increased focus on road infrastructure, tourism and broadband rollout.
It also called for greater co-operation between the various agencies in the county to cut down on red tape and assist decision making.
This comprehensive report by the Joint Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation aims to boost the overall economic fortunes of the South East region including South Tipperary.
It points out that in 2012 there were just 2 IDA visits to the county – and a total of 20 to the entire region -compared to 137 visits in Dublin and 31 in Cork – this is despite a unemployment rate of 18.8% in the south East.
It recommends movement in a number of areas – Education – through further exploitation of LIT resources and the newly formed Education and Training boards.
Tourism – the development of a hotel in proximity to the Rock of Cashel to encourage more bed nights here, better promotion of the Butler Trail as well as the numerous heritage sites locally.
The report highlights the importance of fast-tracking improvements to the N24 to greatly improve the Limerick to Waterford road corridor via South Tipperary and calls for greater investment in the roll out of broadband with PC ownership below the national average – particularly in this county.
The plan also has high praise for the South Tipperary County Hub Data as a means to cut down on red tape and feels this should be evaluated and rolled out throughout the region.
