National Famine Commemoration plans

Large crowds are expected to converge on Ballingarry tomorrow for the National Famine Commemoration.

The Famine Warhouse 1848 will be the centre of attention with Taoiseach Leo Varadkar and Heritage Minister Heather Humphreys among those in attendance.

The commemoration programme will open with a ceremony in which the local community will participate.

It will culminate in the formal State ceremonial event, which will include the National flag and military honours, and wreath laying ceremonies.

During the ceremony the Taoiseach will also plant a tree and unveil a commemorative plaque.

Some traffic restrictions will be in place around Ballingarry tomorrow as Superintendent Pat Murphy explains.
