A local TD says he will be pushing for the abolition of students fees altogether at the Fine Gael parliamentary party meeting later.
Minister James Lawless confirmed this week that the thousand Euro cost-of-living reduction to the higher education registration fees would be scrapped for next year.
The move will bring the cost back up to three thousand Euro and has drawn widespread criticism despite the minister saying there will be other grants on offer.
Tipperary South’s Michael Murphy has told Tipp Today that he’ll be arguing for the fees to be cut or removed completely when his Oireachtas colleagues debate the matter this evening:
“The minister now is going to publish an options paper which will identify various options aimed at reducing the costs and my understanding is that then will feed in to the budget and any decision that will take place within the budget.
“I’m very clear and I will be speaking at the parliamentary party meeting, we have to fulfil the commitment in the programme for Government and reduce and abolish student fees.”
