A South Tipperary County Councillor has strongly criticised the structure of the Mortgage to Rent Scheme which was recently announced by the Minister for Housing and Planning.

Labour's Bobby Fitzgerald says the scheme in its current form is nothing more than a token PR exercise.

The Carrick on Suir based Councillor feels the scheme announced by Minister Jan O'Sullivan is so restrictive that only those that qualify for social and local authority housing would be eligible.

Councillor Fitzgerald suggests that the scheme will only apply to 100 houses yet there are 100,000 households in mortgage arrears at present.
