Mortgage hunters are warned not to be tempted by banks’ special offers, which may be masking a higher interest rate.

That’s the warning from the Consumer watchdog, which says switchers could also save tens of thousands of euro.

It comes as AIB, the country’s largest lender, has announced a drop in rates, starting Monday.

Aine Carroll from the Competition and Consumer Protection Commission on the offers bombarding mortgage hunters.

But she says that what’s really important is the interest rate.

She also recommends switching, which could save you serious money.

This comes as AIB has announced a modest rate cut, of a quarter of one percent for current or new customers.

While that may tempt possible switchers, personal Finance Editor with the Irish Independent Charlie Weston says other lenders will come under pressure to follow suit.
