The Government's published its civil debt legislation – which removes the threat of jail from people who don't pay debts such as water charges.
Creditors can apply to the court for an attachment order against earnings for amounts of between €500 and €4,000 – though credit card companies, financial institutions and moneylenders are excluded.
Speaking at the announcement of a protest at the Dáil tomorrow evening, Anti Austerity Alliance TD Ruth Coppinger says the new legislation won't do any damage to their campaign for a mass boycott of the water charges.
Meanwhile Tipperary householders who are on a group-water scheme or have their own well are being told there's nothing to fear from registering with Irish Water.
Today is the registration deadline for people who want to avail of the government's €100 Water Conservation Grant.
This money will be paid out by the Department of Social Protection from September.
Many people have expressed reservations about supplying their details to Irish Water even if they are not customers of the utility.
However Environment Minister and Tipperary TD Alan Kelly says they should register in order to qualify for the grant.
