The works on Ardfinnan bridge are estimated at €700,000 with an application for funding already before the Government.
Traffic restrictions have been in place on Ardfinnan bridge for a number of months after significant structural damage was discovered there.
The crossing over the River Suir is particularly busy at this time of year as farmers begin the first cut of silage while there is also an increase in tourist traffic on the route.
Initial estimates put the cost of repairs at €700,000 – however this could increase once a consultant engineer determines the full extent of the damage to the 116 metre long bridge.
Local Independent Councillor Martin Lonergan says Minister Shane Ross is set to see first hand the problems in Ardfinnan.
Senior Roads Engineer with Tipperary County Council Michael Hayes says the works will take around 6 or 7 months to complete depending on conditions in the river.
He's hopeful that repairs will start as soon as possible on the 17th century bridge.
Councillor Martin Lonergan is hoping that the Transport Minister will see the need for works to be carried out as a matter of urgency on Ardfinnan Bridge.
He says it's vital that Government funding is forthcoming as soon as possible.
