Minister says Irish Water is here to stay.

Simon Coveney was speaking after thousands to the streets here in Tipperary and nationwide on Saturday to protest over the impending charges.

The Minister has rejected claims that they are form of double taxation stating water must be paid for under a fair and affordable system.

Rallies against Irish Water took place in Nenagh, Cashel, Roscrea, Tipperary Town and Carrick on Suir on Saturday.

Meanwhile the Mayor of Drogheda has denied that his resignation from Fine Gael is a publicity stunt.

Kevin Callan announced yesterday that he was stepping down from the party in protest over water charges.

He's to stay on as Mayor but will become an independent member of Louth County Council.
