The Garda Barracks in Clonmel is to relocate to Kickham Barracks.

That's according to Fine Gael T.D Tom Hayes who met with the Justice and Defence Minister Alan Shatter during a visit to Tipp Town yesterday.

Many had suggested the former army barracks as the ideal location for the Gardai as their present base on Emmet Street is accepted as being unfit for purpose.

Deputy Hayes says significant progress has been made not just in relocating the Gardai but for a number of other groups to use the Kickham Barracks site.

In the new capital programme in 2014 funds will be made available to build a new Garda station on the site while the VEC and L.I.T will also be utilising Kickham Barracks.
