Minister of State at the Department of Health, Kathleen Lynch, says the cost of delivering free GP care to under 6s and over 70s was always going to be higher than the €37 million the Government had hoped for.

The Irish Medical Organisation yesterday announced it has reached a deal with the Department of Health and the HSE to provide the service.

The cost of the scheme – which will be available from mid July – is expected to amount to around 70 million for a full year – almost twice the figure the Government had initially put on it.

Junior Minister Kathleen Lynch says GPs had come in with a much higher figure and negotiations are about agreeing to a number everyone can live with.
