In order to protect patient care, medical professionals should be required to sit an English exam according to a Tipperary MEP.

A professional healthcare directive is going through the European parliament at the moment – under that directive, nurses who train in one EU member state would be free to work in another member state.

In order to protect patient safety, Ireland South MEP Phil Prendergast says it's essential that nurses – and other health professionals – speak our language correctly – so that they can accurately give instructions about medicine and care.
