The French Ambassador has addressed a service at Dublin Castle to honour the victims of the Charlie Hebdo terrorist attack.
The National Union of Journalists said the ceremony was an opportunity to 'defend the right to freedom of expression'.
A roll call of the victims was read out during the event, followed by a minute's silence.
Cathaoirleach of the NUJ's Irish Executive Council Gerry Curran says they felt compelled to organise the event.
Meanwhile, French President Francois Hollande has called for the French public to stand together at this difficult time, following terrorists attacks in Paris.
French police yesterday stormed two hostage sites in the Paris area, killing three hostage takers.
Two brothers – who attacked Charlie Hebdo magazine on Wednesday – were killed at a warehouse where they had held a hostage north of Paris.
In the second incident in eastern Paris, anti-terrorist forces stormed a supermarket where hostages were being held by a gunman with reported links to the brothers.
The suspect and four hostages died, but 15 people managed to escape.
President Francois Hollande, has called for the French public to be united during this difficult time.
