The proposal of a minute's silence for the former Northern Ireland Deputy First Minister, who died on Tuesday morning at the age of 66, met with some opposition at a meeting of the Templemore-Thurles District councillors.
Some members objected on the grounds that it hadn't been agreed with them beforehand.
But Sinn Fein's David Doran says he went through the normal procedures and didn't expect an argument over it and insisted he followed protocol on the matter and feels the ensuring argument somewhat besmirched the memory of Mr McGuiness.
However Thurles Councillor Seamus Hanafin says his concerns were based on a lack of consultation on the matter and that it wasn't a political issue. He felt it was disrespectful to raise in the middle of the meeting instead of agreeing it beforehand.
