Mayor of Clonmel considers possible legal challenge to reform of Local Government.

The Mayor of Clonmel along with his counterparts in the countries four other Borough Councils is threatening legal action in opposition to the changes to local government planned by Minister Phil Hogan.

Mayor Billy Shoer says they have backed a proposal by the Association of Municipal Authorities of Ireland to consider a legal challenge to the reform proposals.

The Workers and Unemployed Action Group representative claims the heart of local democracy would be taken away from local people if the changes go ahead.

Local Government Minister Phil Hogan plans to abolish all Town and Borough Councils next year.

The Mayors of Clonmel, Kilkenny, Wexford, Sligo and Drogheda are seeking an urgent meeting with the Taoiseach, the Tanaiste and Minister Hogan to discuss the proposals.
