The Thurles native is apparently seeking a nomination in Dublin – she lost her Dail seat in Dun Laoghaire in last years General Election.

Mary Hanafin is the daughter of former Fianna Fail Senator Des Hanafin and sister of John Hanafin who was also a Senator.

During her time in the Dail Mary Hanafin served as  Minister for Education & Science, Minister for Social & Family Affairs, Minister for Tourism, Culture & Sport and Minister for Enterprise, Trade & Innovation.

However her hopes of contesting a European Parliament Election could be dashed by younger members of Fianna Fail who see her as a link to the past.
